ஏலகிரி (Yelagiri) என்னும் மலைவாழிடம் வாணியம்பாடி - திருப்பத்தூர்  சாலையில், வேலூர் மாவட்டத்தில்உள்ளது. ஏலகிரி மலை கடல் மட்டத்தில் இருந்து 1,048 மீ உயரத்தில் நான்கு மலைகளால் சூழப்பட்டு அமைதியான சூழ்நிலையில் அமைந்துள்ள்ளது. ஏலகிரியின் மொத்த பரப்பளவு 30 சதுர கிலோமீட்டர்

            ஏலகிரி மலை, ஊட்டி மற்றும் கொடைக்கானல் போல் ஒரு வளர்ச்சியுற்ற  சுற்றுலாத் தலமாக இல்லாவிடினும், சாகச விளையாட்டுகளான ஏவூர்தி நழுவுதல் மற்றும் மலையேற்றம் போன்றவற்றை மேம்படுத்துவதன் மூலம் இதனைச்  சுற்றுலாத் தலமாக்கும் பணிகள் தற்போது நடந்து வருகின்றன.

ஏலகிரியில் 14 சிறு கிராமங்களும், சில கோவில்களும் அரசு  மூலிகை  மற்றும் பழ பண்ணைகளும் அழகுற அமைந்துள்ளன. அடிப்பகுதி வட்டவடிவமாகவும் பக்கவாட்டில் செங்குத்தான பாறைகளையும் கொண்டு பார்ப்பதற்கு ஒரு பீடபூமி  போல இம்மலை காட்சியளிக்கிறது.

மலையின் வடக்கு மற்றும் வடகிழக்குச் சரிவுகளிலும் , மலை உச்சியிலும் பசுமைமாறா மரங்கள் காணப்படுகின்றன. பொதுவாக இம்மலைப்பகுதியில் அதிகபட்ச வெப்பநிலை 31 பாகைசெல்சியசும் குறைந்தபட்ச வெப்பநிலை 11 பாகை செல்சியசும் பதிவாகிறது

            சுமார் 200 முதல் நானூறு ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பிருந்தே மக்கள் இம்மலையில் வாழ்ந்து வருகின்றனர். இன்று சுமார் 4000 பேர் இம்மலை முழுவதுமாக விரவியுள்ளனர். மக்களில் பெரும்பாலானவர்கள் இந்து சமயத்தைச் சேர்ந்த வெள்ளாளர்கள் எனப்படும் மலைவாழ் மக்களாக உள்ளனர்.  

இருளர்கள் என்று அழைக்கப்படும் மலைவாழ் குழுக்களும் இங்குள்ளனர். ஏழாம் நூற்றாண்டைச் சார்ந்த திப்பு சுல்தான் படையைச் சேர்ந்த போர் வீரர்கள் இப்பீடபூமியில் குடியேறி வாழ்ந்தார்கள் என்றும் கூறப்படுகிறது

சலகாம்பாறை நீர்வீழ்ச்சி

ஏலகிரி மலையில் உள்ள அட்டாறு நதி சடையனூர் என்ணுமிடத்தில் 15 மீட்டர் உயரத்தில் இருந்து அருவியாகக் கொட்டுகிறது. இந்த அருவி சலகம்பாறை நீர்வீழ்ச்சி என்று அழைக்கப்படுகிறது.மலையில் காணப்படும் பல்வேறு வகையான மூலிகைத் தாவரங்கள் ஊடாக நதி வருவதால் அருவியில் நீராடுவது நோய்களை நீக்கும் என்ற நம்பிக்கையும் உண்டு. நிலாவூரில் இருந்து 6 கி.மீ மலைப் பயணத்தின் மூலமாக நீர்வீழ்ச்சியை அடையலாம். சிவலிங்க் வடிவத்தில் ஒரு முருகர் கோவில் நீர்வீழ்ச்சிக்கு அருகில் அமைந்துள்ளது.

பூங்கானூர் ஏரி மற்றும் குழந்தைகள் பூங்கா

பூங்கானூர் ஏரி 56706 சதுரமைல் அளவிற்கு பரப்பளவு கொண்டது. 10 முதல் 20 அடி ஆழம் வரையுள்ள இவ்வேரியின் தண்ணீர் கொள்ளளவு 4.88 மில்லியன் கன அடி ஆகும். ஏரியைச்சுற்றிலும் ஒரு கிலோமீட்டர் தூரத்திற்கு நடைபாதை அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

ஏரிக்கு அருகில் குழந்தைகள் பூங்கா ஒன்றும் அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. அழகிய பூஞ்செடிகளும் விளையாட்டுக் கருவிகளும் குழந்தைகளை கவரும் வகையில் உருவாக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.பூங்கா காலை 6 மணி முதல் மாலை ஆறுமணி வரை திறக்கப்படுகிறது. சிறுவர்களுக்கு ரூ5 நுழைவுக் கட்டணம் என்றும் பெரியவர்களுக்கு ரூ 15 நுழைவுக்கட்டணம் என்றும் நிர்ணயம் செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது. மேலும் 20 நிமிட படகு சவாரிக்கு கட்டணமாக துடுப்பு படகிற்கு ரூ20, கால்மிதி படகிற்கு ரூ50 கட்டணமாகவும் நிர்ணயம் செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது.

·         கிறிஸ்தவ இளையோர் அமைப்பு (YMCA): இது ஒரு இலாப நோக்கற்ற நிறுவனம். இங்கு தங்குவதற்கும், மலையேற்றம் மற்றும் பிற முகாம் தொடர்பானச் செயல்களுக்கும் உதவுகிறார்கள்.

·         கோடைகாலத்தில் தமிழக சுற்றுலாத் துறையின் சார்பில் கோடை விழாக்கள் நடத்தப்படுகின்றன.

ஏலகிரி மலைக்குச் செல்லும் வசதி

வேலூர், சென்னை, சோலையார் பேட்டை,  வாணியம்பாடி,  திருப்பத்தூர்  போன்ற இடங்களில் இருந்து ஏலகிரி மலைக்கு பேருந்துகள் உண்டு. அருகில் 19 கி.மீ தொலைவில் சோலையார் பேட்டை இரயில் நிலையம் உள்ளது.

 சென்னைவிமான நிலையத்தில் இருந்து 219 கிலோமீட்டர் தொலைவிலும்  பெங்களூரு விமானநிலையத்தில் இருந்து 193 கி.மீ தொலைவிலும் ஏலகிரி மலை அமைந்துள்ளது.

The hill station of Yelagiri in Tamil Nadu is a cluster of 14 hamlets or villages spread across 29 square kilometers, 3,460 feet above sea level. The drive to the picturesque idyll winds through 14 hairpin bends that open up to spectacular mountain landscapes; after every twist and turn, the city seems to fade away a little more.

The first thing that hits you on arrival in Yelagiri is the lack of noise. The beautiful rustic surroundings are extraordinarily quiet and when someone rings a temple bell somewhere on the hill, you can hear it as clearly as if you were right there. The smells of mango and jackfruit plantations are diluted by the subtle fragrances of fresh foliage. You suddenly realize how close you are to nature.

The most popular landmark of Yelagiri is the centrally-located Lake Punganoor. Pedal and manned rowing boats offer a chance to watch the beauty of the surrounding hills during a leisurely cruise. The hills of Yelagiri are also very popular among adventure enthusiasts in Tamil Nadu for trekking. Swamimalai, the highest peak in the Yelagiri hills at 4338 feet, is a breathtakingly beautiful 1-hour trek from Yelagiri.

Paragliding is another sport that's drawing visitors. The hill station was recently chosen the second best natural spot in India for the sport, next only to Panchgani in Maharashtra. But apart from all of this, it is the morning walks, the evening strolls, and guided jungle sojourns at night that epitomizes the true charm of Yelagiri. As you gradually slow down to match the pace of the surroundings, a sense of wellbeing settles over you…

At 4,338 feet, the Swamimalai Hill is a stunning hill located close to Yelagiri. If you love trekking, then make sure you don’t miss conquering this hill. Since the walk is quite easy, the beautiful view can be enjoyed by newbie’s and non-trekkers as well.

 

 

 

 

BEST TIME TO VISIT :

June to February is the most pleasant time to be in Yelagiri. The 3-day Summer Festival in May is a time of festivity and cultural programmed. The Yelagiri Paragliding Club hosts an international paragliding festival around September which you might want to attend.

PUNGANOOR Lake the artificial lake at the centre of Yelagiri offers pedal and manned rowing boat rides. A beautiful garden, with a children's park, surrounds the lake. This a good place to spend your first day in Yelagiri, before setting off on more adventurous trips!

Swamimalai 4,338 feet, this is the highest point and the most popular trek around Yelagiri. The Swamimalai temple on top offers stunning views of the countryside.

VELAVAN (MURUGAN) TEMPLE Dedicated to Lord Murugan, the Velavan temple is again on a hill top and offers splendid views of the landscape below.

NATURE PARK The lovely 10-acre grounds have an aquarium, an artificial waterfall, a musical fountain, and excellent landscaping.

HERBAL FARMA herbal farm is being developed near Punganoor Lake for growing rare herbs used in Ayurvedic and Siddha medicines.

JALAGAMPARAI FALLS The River Attaaru runs through the valleys of Yelagiri Hills, and flows over at the village of Jadaiyanoor to form the waterfall. It's a great spot for a day-long picnic, and offers some lovely treks. Vainu Poppa Solar.

OBSERVATORY Kavalur: The second biggest solar observatory in south Asia is situated in Kavalur, 65 km from Yelagiri. You need permission to visit the observatory.

TREKKING : The hills around Yelagiri offer tremendous scope for easy and medium-difficulty hikes, making this one of the most popular trekking destinations in Tamil Nadu. You can do uphill treks like Swamimalai or downhill treks like Jalagampari Falls. Those looking for tough climbs can set off for Polar through the Javvadi hills and other routes. Note that it is important to carry food, water, and other essentials while embarking on any trek in Yelagiri since almost nothing will be available en route and even possibly at the destination.
PARAGLIDING :  The Yelagiri Paragliding Club is developing this hill station into a high class paragliding site. Currently three take-off and landing points at heights of 450, 560, and 600 meters AGL (above ground level) have been identified, and professional equipment and instructors are available. The club hosts an international paragliding festival around September.
BOATING :  When you’re looking for a more relaxed activity, head for the pedal and manned rowing boats on Lake Punganoor.
